New Zealand Tiger Moth 50th Anniversary Safari - North Cape to Bluff over 16 days visiting a number of airstrips around both islands with up to 18 aircraft including non Tiger Moth supporters
A flying adventure via a few remote and off the beaten track airstrips in the South Island of New Zealand. Another year has disappeared into history since our last flyaway to the South Island where a few of us have been gathering over the last few years. We are like birds 🦅 as we adventure into the air with new feeding spots to be checked out and favourites returned to.
Continued fair weather had the adventure brought to a halt in Motueka as we sat out the approaching frontal band working its way up the West Coast...fun on a bike then over the Flora Saddle for further adventures on the Karamea side
My next adventure had been planned as I headed back to Nelson on the bikes and so I had a prearranged Pelorus Mail Boat ride to embark on, out of Havelock at 10:00 am next morning! The skipper was to collect me from the Havelock airstrip that I had arranged to land on nearby. Timing was critical to getting aboard this vessel as planned. It all began with my early morning walk through a very quiet Nelson township from the Inn to the far end of town to the bus stop.
A quick texted exchange with the approaching team and I was pedalling in the direction of Brightwater for the planned lunch stop and team gathering.
Quite a different pace this week and with the prevailing fine weather, a wonderful extended visit to one of my favourite parts of New Zealand. My new Lycra was up to the task so I pedalled in a relaxed manner easing into this next phase well.
Arriving in Hokitika we all formed a line onto runway 09 so we could arrive at the parking bay with the minimal expenditure of energy...but could we all pull up in time to do this? Yes we could ...just fooling....so into the parking bay we went and wondered where the next adventure would lead us! But, as has happened throughout this journey, the next adventure was poised awaiting participants.
This event was the catalyst for adventure flying and had been on the list for a return visit for some time. Life rushes by without events getting back onto the list, let alone to the top. I did enjoy my trip to Healthy Bastards
